Hot Mop Roofs

A hot mop roof uses hot asphalt and felt to create layers that are topped with gravel. This roofing is used exclusviely on very low of flat roofs and is also known as a tar and gravel roof. It is on the low end of the cost spectrum but is a very messy install that certainly does not last as long as many other types of roofs.

“It’s a messy process for the installers and fairly dangerous as they can burn themselves very easily. The asphalt is spread evenly across the roofing surface and then a layer of fiberglass and felt is applied over it.”

Basics Of Hot Mop Roof

A hot mop roof involves melting asphalt blocks into a big rectangular metal bucket or cauldron. Some roofing contractors use an enclosed tank to reduce the fumes from the bubbling asphalt. It material is then pumped onto the roofing surface or mopped on by installers. It’s a messy process for the installers and fairly dangerous as they can burn themselves very easily. The asphalt is spread evenly across the roofing surface and then a layer of fiberglass and felt is applied over it. This process is repeated to create several layers an then often an aggregate such as gravel or roiver rock and placed on the top. Some of the aggregate becomes imbedded in the top layer of asphalt and some of it remains loose.

Good For Irregular Shapes
Irregular shaped roofs are not an issue for this method because the asphalt can be applied to any shape and the felt and fiberglass can be easily cut to go right over them. It is also easy to go around objects like air conditioners, chimneys etc. This can be once area that drives up cost when using other materials.

Disadvantages

Doesn’t Last As Lon
The average lifespan is 20 years, although the range is more like 15 to 30. Proper roof maintenance is key to insuring that you maximize your hard earned dollars that you will spend on any new roofing.
